Teaching Vocabulary Through HOP-SCOTCH game

 TEACHING VOCABULARY THROUGH HOP-SCOTCH GAME (ENGKLEK)

  Indonesian children are the “owners” of beautiful, wise Indonesian traditional games. They have Engrang (a tradition game which the people need to stand and walk on ability on 2 pie-ces of bamboo), Panggal (wooden toy), etc from West Java Province (Ismail, 2009:289-292). They also have Engklek (exercising the body and mind by hopping on one foot on several sections drawn on the ground or pavement), etc.

    Engklek is a popular traditional children's game in Indonesia, especially in rural communities. The game can be found in various regions of Indonesia, in Sumatra, Java, Bali, kalimantan, and sulawesi. In each region is known by different names. It is thought that the name of this game came from the Dutch "job-maandag" and spread to the neonpopulation in colonial times, though such a claim is only temporary.

      The game of engineering is usually played by children, with two to five participants. In Java the game is called an engklek and is usually played by girls. A game similar to the rules of the United Kingdom called hopscotch. The hopscotch game is thought to be very old and dates back to the Roman empire.

   Using games allows you to revise large amounts of vocabulary quickly, so in every lesson make sure you include a mix of reversion and new themes (Vernon, 2010). Besides of the strategies above, Bastioni (2010) explains that music, games and movement activities play an integral part in the young learner’s curriculum, and children require a variety of activities in order to acquire a second or foreign language in the classroom. Students come to our classrooms with different sets of skills, determined by their upbringing and innate abilities, which naturally has a profound effect on their learning styles.

     According to Dr. Snouck Hurgronje (in Aisyah, 2011), engklek comes from India then it spreads all over Indonesia. That is why engklekis familiar in almost all places here, all provinces in Indonesia, even in different names. The name of engklek comes from the Javanese language, means little part of terracotta roof that is used as the pebbles for the players (Widi, 2011).

  The rules of this game are simple, just by jumping on the square drawn on the ground, only by one foot. Players must through the pebble first, and then jump from one box to another, without stepping on the pebble placed on a certain box. The players must skip each box on which the pebble was placed.

    The students needed a teaching media to learn English vocabulary. The media helped them in learning new vocabularies easily. The media used to teach English vocabulary is developed from hop-scotch game. It was modified as well to be the new modern and attractive one. In Indonesia, hop-scotch is called in various names, one of them is engklek.

How to play this game in improving vocabulary ?

    Drawing a certain line on the ground as a map of engklek where the players will jump with one foot. The players also use a small piece of roof tile as the pebble that we throw in the first block of the engklek sections, and they have to take it first before we continue our jump to another side of the map. But, they have to keep our jump and pebble, so they will not step on the wrong line. If a player did it, he/she will stop in that place and have to guess one vocab in English from the other player. If a player can not answer or suggest it, so she/he can not continue to another side. The other players will take she/he turn to play. The player needs to finish 1 round and get the chance with some vocabulary that have they suggest to get the star as the prize for the winner.

Learning English Using Hello Talk Application

 Learning English Using HELLO TALK Application

    HelloTalk is a cool new language learning app that serves one purpose: it connects you directly with native speakers, and provides an interface to text and speak with them, all from your smartphone.

    There are websites out there that let you search for people to talk with, but with these websites the actual conversation happens on Skype, Google plus, or by telephone. HelloTalk acts as the direct interface through which you find a conversation partner and chat, send voice messages or call the people you want to practice with. No need for any third-party software.

    Hello talk also offers translation options from within the app. These features are the paid aspect of the app. This supports the developers to keep the rest of the app free, but I can give you a quick tip to get these tools at no cost. Sign up to the app, and one of your friends will automatically be HelloTalk Team. Simply message them “FI3M” and you'll get 3 months free membership. This includes unlimited access to HelloTalk’s premium features. These are Translation, Voice Recognition, and Transliteration.

1. Hello Talk features

Key features of the app include :

1. Voice chat

2. Text chat

3. Camera share

4. Doodle share (draw in the app to visually represent what you want to talk about)

5. Smileys and other features you'd expect from a good chat program, like notifications of new messages, GPS location sharing, text size settings.

6.  Learning specific features: Translation, Transliteration, and voice recognition to help you write/speak your target language.

7. Mark exchanges (text, voice, images) for studying later, or save the entire chat to refer to later.

2. Practice Speaking Without Feeling Embarrassed

  If you're using HelloTalk’s voice recognition system, then you can simply speak what you want to say. The system will attempt to understand you automatically, and convert that to text to send to your language partner. I tried this out with a few Mandarin phrases, and it worked well.

   This feature lets you practice speaking without having to worry about the embarrassment of someone actually hearing you. What’s more, the conversation can continue in a slower pace than it would if you were speaking on Skype. Your conversation partner can choose whether they reply using text or voice. If they opt for text, you can use the text-to-voice feature to have a voice synthesizer replicate what they may be saying, as if you were having a voice chat.

 Mileage in this feature will vary widely depending on the language, how closely you can emulate a native speaker, and of course limitations of the voice recognition system itself.

3. Find a Language Partner in Your City

   In the past, very recommended using social searches to find language partners who live near you. Meeting with people who speak your target language from your local area is great when you want a break from online lessons.

   HelloTalk has this covered. Its local specific search option helps you find a language partner who lives near you that you can invite out for coffee. As there are over a million HelloTalk users, there’s a good chance of finding somebody in your area.

    The tested this feature out in Sydney, Australia (where I am at the time of writing) and found 24 people within a few kilometres of me looking for a Chinese-English exchange. I also discovered several people ready to offer exchanges for other languages like German, Japanese, Italian, and Spanish. As with Whatsapp, you can share your GPS location to make it easier to find language partners nearby.

  However, unlike many social language sites, HelloTalk doesn't come with a review system for its users. There’s the option for users to fill out an introduction for information about themselves, although many people don't do this. This makes it a little riskier when you are meeting up with strangers, as you don't necessarily know much about them. For this reason, I'd recommend using the meetup feature with caution.

   To find people in your area, just use the search feature to find people who speak the language you are learning, and who want to learn a language that you speak. Then, change the search order to “by location”. Generally, I'd stick to using just the live chat feature via the app, rather than arranging a meet-up if you'd prefer to be cautious.

    Another thing you can do – which I think is a much safer – is use this app while travelling to connect with people in your destination. Then you can pick up local tips on getting around and places to eat, all while getting language practice.

4. Includes Automatic Translation

   HelloTalk also includes an automatic translation feature. This is really helpful if you are OK with just getting the general gist of things. It can also help keep conversations flowing, since you don't have to open another app/window to get the translation.

     When you’re chatting using HelloTalk, you can see your conversation partner’s language/location as a flag. Additionally, while you talk to them, their local time is shown at the top of the chat window. This is handy if you need to know whether to say good morning or good evening to start your conversation.

5. Grammar Correction Feature

    Another cool feature is the option to highlight your conversation partner’s reply and select it for correction to help them improve their sentences. They can do the same for you. This is different to simply replying with the right way of saying something, because it keeps the dialogue focused on the actual conversation.

    Finally, the app has a mode that counts the amount of characters  or time spent (e.g. 500 characters or 5 minutes) in one language. When it reaches the limit, it suggests that you switch languages. This avoids the awkwardness of trying to bring it up yourself in the conversation.

How to set up Hello Talk application ?

    When we set up the hello talk accounts we will be directed to fill in names, ages, native languages, mother tongue, a tongue, and a language that one wants to learn (it can be more than one language). We must also fill in some degree of understanding in our mother tongue and in what language we would like to learn (since we may have already studied it).

  Then start looking for any conversation you want. Hello talk will direct people from different languages and countries toward those of us who both want to learn foreign languages.

Paraga Game From Bugis

        Indonesia is an archipelagic country which has a wealth of diverse flora and fauna. In addition, this country with a tropical climate also has culture, traditions and customs that are widely known to foreign countries. One of the rich traditions possessed by the Indonesian people is traditional games.

Almost every region in Indonesia has a variety of traditional games, such as hide and seek, cublak-cublak suweng to gobak sodor. Besides being interesting and exciting to play this traditional game, it also has positive values in everyday life.

Some of the positive values that are obtained when playing traditional games are practicing cohesiveness, togetherness, mutual cooperation and mutual respect, such as the traditional game originating from Bugis and Makassar, it is Paraga.

Understanding the Paraga game

Paraga is a traditional game of the Bugis and Makassar tribes. This unique game is perhaps the only unique game in the world that features skill in playing ball with dance.

Paraga or football is an art sport that was born in the archipelago of South Sulawesi, originating from Bugis-Makassar. It is said that in the past this art sport could only be consumed by the royal family. At that time a man who is good at playing sports will be considered perfect. However, along with the times all levels of society can enjoy it now.

Paraga is a game that reflects local customs. Paraga is usually played by men, given the complex movements of the paraga and is an agility training movement. The background of the entry and spread of the art of sports in South Sulawesi was accompanied by the entry and spread of Islam in South Sulawesi in the 15th century. Football is used as a medium for the spread of Islam, with the public flocking to watch and indirectly become a forum for spreading Islam in South Sulawesi.

At first glance, the soccer ball is almost similar to the takraw ball because of the shape of the ball and the ball material made of rattan. However, what makes the difference between Sepak Takraw and Sepak Takraw is that if the takraw balls are only arranged in one layer of rattan, the sports balls are arranged in three layers. The difference between Sepak Takraw and Sepak Takraw is that Sepak Takraw is widely contested, however, it is different with soccer, which is specifically shown in its beauty on various occasions. Such as welcoming guests, celebrating ceremonies and other big day ceremonies.

How to play the game Paraga

Usually in paraga or soccer performances there are six dancers and four music players. All of them have their respective duties to harmonize with one another. One of the elements that must be trained in this sports kick is balance which is the capital to process the ball in such a way.

Especially in a compound movement formation that relies on teamwork so that the ball remains in their control.

Pa'sapu or head belt that is characteristic of the clothes worn by paraga players. The head belt is covered with starch to keep it upright when the paraga players work the ball. The clothes that the paragans wear are called the Bela clothes, while the musicians wear closed suits.

Do not forget the typical bugis silk sarong or so-called lipa sabbe to complement their appearance. And usually bright colored clothes will be chosen to attract the attention of the audience.

Togetherness and strong determination and mutual cooperation make the paragan players not just play. There are special values that want to be taught not only for the players but also for the audience. Soccer is an artistic heritage that must be preserved together because it has its own features that are not shared by other traditional arts.

2. The presentation material contained in the application is specifically for high school students only. The lack of choices such as SD, SMP is the next weakness, and when you have a family in SD or SMP, this application will not be able to be used by them, meaning that when you want other guidance, you are of course obliged to look for other applications that provide guidance packages at the SMP and Elementary level and it is no longer an open secret, it will definitely cost extra for it.

3. Applications that are still new so many are still unfamiliar with the application as a whole and may have an impact on the users of the application itself.

         In addition to the above, there are several things that might be in the form of advantages but it could also be a drawback of Pahamify itself, PT. Pahami Cipta Edukasi tries to create fun learining elements with the gamification method, so that it looks like a children's game, and maybe some people will feel like a children's application and feel it doesn't match the contents of an application that demands high school or its equivalent, which becomes the material of this application itself in terms of appearance.

The hope is that in the future Pahamify will continue to grow and be able to answer its shortcomings so that Pahamify can reach all the desires of its potential users in the future. The most important thing is that it can compete with other tutors who have been active in the world of online tutoring for a long time.

Egrang, A Traditional Game that is Rarely Played

Indonesia, which is rich in various cultures and nature, certainly has its own uniqueness compared to other countries. One of them is about the various traditional games that have existed.

Various traditional games are in great demand because in the past they were not as sophisticated as they are today, where now almost all games can be played on a single cellphone. Try to imagine that in the 90s era, from children to adults, they would always play in a traditional way, but it gave an unforgettable impression until now.

EGRANG GAME
One of the many traditional games that are much loved and now rarely played is the Egrang game. It is not easy to use stilts, only people who are used to it and can conquer the balance. Egrang consists of 2 sticks about 150 cm high made of bamboo, at the bottom they are given a footing to be used as a footstool. The origin of Egrang is not known with certainty because in almost various regions there are games of Egrang, but this game was popularized by the people of Jakarta.

HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME
This game is quite difficult to play because it requires a good balance. Therefore it takes practice and help from friends in order to get a good balance. How to play it is as follows:
1) Beginners can use a chair or other assistive device that is parallel to the footrest, then place the foot on the footrest.
2) Hold the bamboo with both hands then step on the bamboo footing like an ordinary leg.
3) Step on the Egrang carefully to keep your balance and don't fall over.
4) After the cue is given, each participant immediately climbs the Egrang and walks to the finish line that has been determined The values contained in the game.

A pair of bamboo that is stepped on in this game is like the environment in which we stand. With stilts we learn to control ourselves, skills are needed, to maintain balance and self-confidence when riding them. The balance in playing stilts can be controlled when we hold on to the bamboo.

In life, balance can be controlled as long as it can be nurtured from an early age in the child by providing motivation that he is able to climb the stilts to the finish line.

SLEPDUR GAME BY EKA FITRIANA

Slepdur or better known as the dragon snake game is usually played by girls and boys together. Slepdur comes from North Sulawesi. In some areas this game is played in the evening and at night.

In ancient times children used to play slepdur at night when the moon was full. The number of players from slepdur must be large, in addition to making the dragons long tails, the game will be more exciting.

This game is usually played on a wide field. The children line up hand in hand (hands on friend's shoulders) made like a long dragon tail

Usually the tall child who becomes the head of the dragon or the front one to be the parent who leads the way of the snake. Apart from the tail of the snake there are two children who will become the gate. The hands of the two children will be grafted upwards and they will choose one of the children to be used as a sacrifice (substitute for the gate). When the snake is walking the children will sing the slepdur song to determine the stop of the dragon snake.

Slep Dur itself is actually a song that accompanies the game which is sung by children (at least 7-8 children) where two children form a tunnel of two pairs of hands which the other children will pass through and the tunnel. It will seem as if the song collapses when the song Slep Dur is finished. Apart from preserving one of the national heritage, it turns out that the game can also be used by teachers to introduce English, especially in increasing vocabulary

The following are the modified Slep Dur rules:

(1) The teacher explains themed pictures such as Animals and their characteristics that are easy to remember by children, for example Anjing = dog (barking = barking) and Kucing = Cat (meowing);

(2) After the explanation from the teacher, the children are invited to leave the classroom to play a game;

(3) The teacher explains the rule of the game from Slep Dur to children;

(4) 2 children were chosen to build a tunnel from two pairs of hands. The two students represent right and wrong;

(5) After the tunnel is formed, the other students line up and take turns entering the tunnel while singing the Slep Dur song;

(6) Slep Dur itself was replaced with an alphabet song. This is to make it easier for children to pronounce the vocabulary according to the alphabet in question;

(7) When the alphabet song is finished or stopped, the tunnel made of the pair of hands seems to suddenly collapse until the friend who is passing under it is trapped;

(8) In order to be free from the collapsed tunnel, students are trapped

5 must say one vocab according to the specified alphabet along with its meaning that has been introduced by the teacher before. (this is done to train their memory about the vocabulary because the vocabulary is remembered);

(9) If the trapped student can say one vocab then he will be on the right side but if not it means he will be on the wrong side;

(10) After all the participants have been caught, two groups will be formed, namely the true and false groups.

(11) After that the wrong group will be punished for singing the English that has been taught.

    When the countdown ends, the keeper have to find the hiding kids. If you find them, you must run to the fort and touch it, say the name of the hiding kidd and the place he hide. If it's too long in full saying, then just shout the name.

    Oh!, for the hiding kids, you must hide tight. And if you found by the keeper, try to run as fast as you can to the fort before the keeper, touch the fort and say "sign!"

    If the keeper able to seek the hiding kids, then he was defeat and must wait the other hiding kids to be seek, or he will change to be the new keeper. If the keeper able to seek many kids, what will happen? generally, they will have to choose one of them to be the new keeper, by using Janken, make a line behind the keeper and the keeper told one position randomly, or depend on their first agreement. How about the old keeper? he will be join in hiding kids.

    The game formed like that and able to be played continuously with that form, very good and exciting games for boy and girls.

what makes this traditional game good for kids?

    First, it train the kids with physical exercise by moving their body to find hiding spot, to find the hiding kids, then run! the sweats will drop from their chin and make their clothes wet.

Hide and Seek

    Second, it train their eyes to focus and scan the area to find a good spot to hide. this thing was sometime ignorable, but in real life became focus and ability to scan the area will much used.

    Third, it train their focus and their sense in general. the keeper will try to sharpen his ear to hear all the sounds created and process the data, sent it to the brain to calculate where the sounds come from. In other side, the hiding kids will use sneaking step to decrease their step sounds in order to difficults the keeper to find them.

    Fourth, it train their sportivity. not only hide-and-seek, but most of traditional games train the kids about sportivity, avoiding the kids from being common in cheating. This sportivity will be their character in future.

    Fifth, it train the kids to socialize and communicate with their friends. It will help the kids to grow in proper ways, as the olds ask to kids to play with the same age kids.

    Sixth, it is fun. yes, it is extremely fun.

    To explain more about hide and seek, we need to remember and face our childhood memories with our friends, where the spot they commonly hide, who commons become the keeper, whose mom getting angry when their kids late, to remember the smiling faces of our friends in their childhood and where they hide now, should we find them? or wait them run to us?

With the Corona Virus (Covid-19) outbreak which is increasingly spreading throughout the world, especially Indonesia, so that both central and regional governments issued special policies, so that disease outbreaks, especially the Corona Virus (Covid-19), do not spread further. In this case, especially the Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) Nadiem Anwar Makarim urged that learning activities both at schools and colleges in areas affected by Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) should be carried out at home or residence. He emphasized that educators and education personnel also do not need to come to school or campus for a while. The learning process or the settlement of administrative affairs can continue by utilizing technology. The development of information and communication technology has brought enormous changes, especially in the field of education. The changing times make educators in the modern era have to innovate and be creative in learning both in class and outside the classroom. The problem commonly felt by educators in the modern era is the difficulty of finding appropriate and practical methods of utilizing technology in classroom learning. Moreover, during the Covid-19 pandemic this forced a number of students and teachers to do this so that the teaching and learning process could be carried out even though they were separated. In an era of sophisticated information technology that is increasingly popular, making a number of people live in a new world called the virtual world, what is interesting is that it allows someone to be able to cut distances, cross time and magically make someone connect with each other, for example, like holding an online class. It doesn't matter how far apart someone is separated, as long as an internet connection is available smoothly and well, one can easily connect in a virtual room, either through the WhatsApp messenger, Line, Telegram, Facebook messenger, and other chat applications. These virtual spaces allow a person to freely gather, interact directly without pause, real time. the digital era has greatly helped people solve these problems. Distance is no longer a problem, especially when it comes to studying online. Lots of media for online learning to choose from, starting with sophisticated ones and needing paid or free tools / software. This Discord application is actually not an online learning application, but an online game application that is very familiar to children, especially the game mania community. However, teachers are trying to adopt and modify online learning applications. because some teachers see the features in the application can be used for online learning, by using the Discord application in delivering subject matter the teacher can communicate directly with students, so that online learning feels like learning in class as is usually done.

1.      HISTORY OF DISCORDING

Discord is a Voice Chat or Text Chat application that we can use when we play games, especially online games. So we can chat and communicate when we play. Many people use this software because of the difficulty of communicating when playing games. Because in online games that rely on teamwork or cooperation, communication is the main thing. Winning or losing can be determined from the beginning of the game if the players don't have good communication with one another.

            Discord itself was discovered by a man named Jason Citron who was originally the inventor of an Android-based game platform called OpenFeint. Discord is written in Java Script, React, and Elixir languages. Discord was introduced to the public on May 13 2015. And now this software is maintained and developed by Discord Inc. This is the reason why Jason found the concept of Discord itself quite unique. When he was playing games called Final Fantasy XV and League Of Legends, he had problems communicating with his team or colleagues in the game. So he thought of making a software to solve it all. Indeed, at that time there was a Voice Chat software that was provided. This software is called Teamspeak. However, the Teamspeak software itself is quite difficult to use for one reason or another. However, the main obstacle is that this application is paid.

           Currently Discord is growing very rapidly. Previously, only on Windows OS, now Discord is available on various platforms, such as macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Even now it is available online on the website. So we can use it without having to install Discord itself. Discord also has approximately 27 languages available for its users.

ADVANTAGES AND LESS OF DISCORD

Discord is a free chat service similar to Skype or Slack. Discord services are specifically for gamers, to make it easier for them to chat in cyberspace, as well as coordinate and chat while playing games.

Just like most chat services, Discord supports video calls, voice chat and text. Discord also has features that make it easy to find and add friends, so this service is not only used for communication while playing games, but also for social communication as usual.

a.       Advantages

The main advantage of this application when compared to competing applications is its User Interface. The appearance of this application can be said to be quite easy and quite easy to understand for users who are new to this type of application. When compared with competing applications that still have a fairly "old" appearance. However, for this it returns to the user whether he prefers the appearance of Discord or Teamspeak. Another very impressive advantage is that this application is free. This is also a very interesting advantage not compared to Teamspeak which requires us to pay, even though we only pay once at the beginning. However, for users who only want to use Voice Chat without thinking about other features, it is highly recommended to use Discord. Another prominent advantage is that due to the lightness of this application, when we run other software, especially games, the game's performance will not be affected. If we compare it to Teamspeak, the application will make the game decrease in performance.

This Discord application makes teachers / educators feel face to face with students directly even though the actual conditions of the students are in their respective homes. So that, in doing online learning, it feels exactly the same as when teaching in class. Activities that can be done by teachers / educators using the Discord application include:

1. Teachers can do student attendance directly

2. Teachers can communicate with students directly

3. The teacher can give text messages to students

4. Teachers can share lesson material directly with students if there are students who need to learn again at home.

5. Teachers can deliver live streaming real-time material to students by using and displaying various media (power point, audio video, web blogs and so on)

6. Teachers can teach according to the schedule and hours set by the curriculum (which was already running before the covid-19 outbreak)

The advantages of this Discord application include:

1. Use of the application can be offline and online

2. Master install on laptop only 60 mb

3. Teachers can have a private server

4. Teachers can arrange online learning management according to what we want

5. Does not require a large bandwich

6. Internet data usage is very economical

7. Can be used on smartphones

8. Voice chat without interrupting the course of learning

9. There are blogs and communities

10. Unlimited User Accounts

b.      Apart from all the advantages described, of course this application has drawbacks. The first is that the server is still unstable. Because this application is free, of course many users use this application. As a result, the servers are too crowded or full so that sometimes users cannot use this application because the servers are too full. And for users in several countries, for example Indonesia, Discord itself still doesn't provide a dedicated server for Indonesia. The closest available server is Sever Singapore. And if this server is an error then the closest one is Sydney Server. The farther the server distance from the country, of course the internet usage is greater than usual. This will be a loss for users who use their cellphone internet quota. Because of course it will make the quota run out quickly. The next drawback is the relatively incomplete features of Teamspeak. Why is it called relative because not all use this feature. For example using music features that can be listened to while playing. The music feature itself has not been provided by the official Discord. As a result, users who have the ability in the IT field will create a feature commonly called BOT. The official Discord itself provides this feature for music lovers.

CONCLUSION

The Covid-19 Pandemic period forces us to change the order of human life, especially in school activities. Many activities are now being carried out online, one of which is teaching and learning activities. Covid-19 has forced a number of students to study at home. Online or online lectures are alternative options for teaching and learning activities in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Efforts are made to keep all teaching and learning activities such as discussions and presentations running with various adjustments even though they are carried out online. For online lectures, students and lecturers can prepare devices that can support teaching and learning activities.

Online lecture activities are carried out with several applications that provide face-to-face services in the form of audio and video, such as Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and WhatsApp Group. This activity is carried out while still paying attention to the effectiveness and achievement of the quality of the planned learning. Discord is an application choice that is used as a medium for conducting online classes.

Discord is a free voice chat application commonly used to communicate. The Discord application is also commonly used by online game players. Discord is software that can be used on smartphones. With this application students and teachers can discuss or carry out presentations about the material they discuss.

Using this application is fairly easy. Teachers and students can download it via smartphone. Users can download it via google playstore. Discord also has its advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages of this application is that the appearance of this application can be said to be quite easy and quite easy to understand for users who are new to this type of application. Apart from all the advantages described, of course this application has drawbacks. The first is that the server is still unstable. Because this application is free, of course many users use this application. As a result, the servers were too crowded.
